Meet Boeing's Black phone, which self-destructs its data if cracked open

on

With the NSA spying on us Boeing releases an entry level smart phone, which is supposed to be released in 2012. The company posted full detail's of it's "Black" phone. The phone is specifically made for people who care about security and defense. The FCC also published the specifications of it's hardware and software, including the self-destruction feature if cracked open.

The Boeing Black is powered by Dual 1.2 GHz ARM Cortex A9 CPUs. The spec sheet shows that it
comes with a 4.3" qHD display with a resolution of 540x960 pixels. The phone weighs about 170g and is powered by a Lithium-Ion 1500mAH battery. The phone also supports Dual SIM cards along with LTE, WCDMA and GSM. It sports some internal storage and can be expanded with an external SD card if required. Boeing Black is powered by Android which Boeing says will work as the way you'd expect. The phone measures 13.24mm in thickness, 67.6mm horizontally and  131.9mm vertically.

The whole phone is assembled in the US and can be expanded with its back panel to work with biometric scanners, satellite transceivers, solar chargers and other accessories.

However the most likable feature of this phone is its security measure which destroys the stored data when cracked open. The FCC filing spotted by Quartz sheds some light on how this works.

The Boeing Black phone is manufactured as a sealed device both with epoxy around the casing and with screws, the heads of which are covered with tamper proof covering to identify attempted disassembly. Any attempt to break open the casing of the device would trigger functions that would delete the data and software contained within the device and make the device inoperable.

Its not exactly clear how this would work, if say the battery is completely depleted. The Verge has contacted Boeing on this case.

The announcement date is not set and mentioned even though WSJ says it's coming soon.
